Gedenken im Stollen der Erinnerung / Julie Sassoon „land of shadows“

Dieses Jahr wird es am 14.März 2017 ein „special“ anlässlich des 75. Jahrestages der Errichtung des KZ Nebenlagers Steyr-Münichholz am 14.März 1942 geben. Heute ist in diesem Luftschutzbunker, der von KZ-Häftlingen gebaut wurde, ein Museum – der „Stollen der Erinnerung“ untergebracht. In der vom Mauthausen Komitee Steyr initiierten Ausstellung wird das Schicksal der Zwangsarbeiter und KZ-Häftlinge behandelt. Geplant sind zunächst um 18.00 Uhr ein kurzes GEDENKEN im „Stollen der Erinnerung und anschließend ein KLAVIERKONZERT der jüdischen, in Berlin lebenden Pianistin, JULIE SASSOON im Alten Theater Steyr.

Amir Bresler (ISR) - drums Omer Klein ist ein israelischer Jazzpianist und Komponist. Stilistisch wird er auch von Einflüssen jenseits des Modern Jazz inspiriert, etwa „von der traditionellen Musik seiner orientalischen Kultur“.
Klein, der in Netanja aufwuchs, begann mit sieben Jahren, Klavier zu spielen und verfasste erste Kompositionen. Als Jugendlicher studierte er Jazz an der Thelma Yellin Hochschule der Künste und gab mit 16 Jahren erste Konzerte. 2005 zog Klein in die USA, um in Boston am New England Conservatory bei Danilo Pérez zu studieren. Er zog dann nach New York, wo er mit Joel Frahm, Mark Feldman, Clarence Penn, Ben Street, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jason Lindner, Avishai Cohen, Donny McCaslin und Jaleel Shaw arbeitete.
Seit 2006 hat Klein - zählt man das Album Duet mit Bassist Haggai Cohen-Milo hinzu - sechs Alben unter eigenem Namen eingespielt, davon drei mit seinem Omer Klein Trio (mit Bassist Haggai Cohen-Milo und Schlagzeuger Ziv Ravitz bzw. Amir Bresler). Das Trio-Album Rockets on the Balcony (2010), das auf John Zorns Tzadik-Label erschien, wurde im Down Beat und in der JazzTimes besonders hervorgehoben.[3] Derzeit lebt Klein in Düsseldorf, für dessen Schauspielhaus er 2011 die Theatermusik zu Lemon Tree komponierte. Omer Klein’s new album, Sleepwalkers, is due February 17, 2017, and marks Klein’s debut for Warner Music. Omer recorded his newest work with his world-touring trio feat. Haggai Cohen-Milo on bass and Amir Bresler on drums. The 13 original compositions explore themes of Internet-Age isolation, music’s relation to the mysterious, and the trio’s life on the road. Bernd Reiter (A) - drums Don Menza, ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazzmusiker und Arrangeur. Menza lernte 1953/54 in der Highschool Saxophon und vertiefte diese Kompetenz im Studium an der State University of New York. Während seiner Armeezeit in Stuttgart studierte er Klarinette und war ab November 1956 Mitglied der „7. Army Jazzband“, in der damals auch Don Ellis, Leo Wright und Cedar Walton spielten. 1957 trat er auf dem Deutschen Jazzfestival in einer „Four Brothers“-Formation mit Joki Freund, Hans Koller und Willi Sanner auf, bevor er in die Vereinigten Staaten zurückkehrte. 1959 spielte er mit Al Belleto und wurde beim Notre Dame Festival als bester Tenorsaxophonist ausgezeichnet. 1960 und 1961 arbeitete er bei Maynard Ferguson, anschließend bei Stan Kenton, bevor er mit einem eigenen Quintett in Buffalo aktiv war.

Zwischen 1964 und 1968 gehörte er zum Orchester von Max Greger und war zugleich der Co-Leader des Jazzensembles des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Joachim Ernst Berendt produzierte 1965 mit ihm die Platte „Morning Song“ (mit u.a. Rick Kiefer, Fritz Pauer, Pierre Favre). 1967 wurde er beim Montreux Jazz Festival herausgestellt und trat in verschiedenen Formationen, auch mit der Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band, auf. In den 1960er Jahren während seines beruflich bedingten Aufenthaltes in München, hatte Menza wesentlichen Anteil am Sound der legendären Jamsessions im Schwabinger Jazzclub „Domicile“.

Nach der Rückkehr in die USA arbeitete Menza bei Buddy Rich, bevor er in Los Angeles als Komponist, Arrangeur und Studiomusiker tätig wurde und dabei auch über einen längeren Zeitraum mit Louie Bellson und seiner Band zusammenarbeitete. Seine Platte „Bones Blues“ (1979) wurde für den kanadischen Juno Award nominiert. Seit 1980 leitete Menza immer wieder eine eigene Bigband, mit denen er seine Kompositionen und Arrangements in einer modernen Mainstream-Variante einspielt. Daneben arbeitete er auch mit der hr-Bigband und anderen europäischen Bigbands, etwa jenen von Bobby Burgess oder Harald Rüschenbaum. Weiterhin unterrichtet er seit 1989 an der Universität von Las Vegas, ist in der „International Association for Jazz Education“ aktiv und gibt Workshops. Wikipedia

Dusan Novakov (A) - drums Für diese neue Band mit dem Namen Triple Ace haben sich 3 wunderbare Musiker der österreichischen Jazzszene zusammengefunden, Oliver Kent – piano, Uli Langthaler – double bass und Dusan Novakov – drums.

Alle 3 spielen seit Jahren mit den besten Musikern und internationalen Stars zusammen, und bringen eine unglaubliche Erfahrung für diese Band mit. Die Reife mit der hier gemeinsam musiziert wird hört man bereits nach den ersten Tönen. Sie haben sich einer der wohl schwierigsten Formen des Jazz gewidmet, dem sogenannten Pianotrio, von dem es Tausende hervorragende auf der Welt gibt. Ich behaupte einmal, dem sind diese drei problemlos gewachsen und haben ein Pianotrio auf die Beine gestellt, das mit den Besten mithalten kann.

Helmut Kagerer Trio (D)

Dusan Novakov (UK) - drums Nostalgie kann Perspektive haben. Sie kann auch Herausforderung sein, denn natürlich wurde alles schon einmal irgendwie gespielt. Für Helmut Kagerer ist das genau der Spaß, der ihn zum Instrument greifen lässt. Da sind die Großen, die Autoritäten und Monumente jazzenzyklopädischer Verehrung, die aber auf den zweiten Blick auch nur und vor allem Musik gemacht haben. Man brauchte einem Joe Pass oder Jim Hall nur zuzusehen und spürte über ihr Spiel hinaus, wie sie sich in die Musik fallen, von ihr treiben ließen. Oft ist verblüffende Technik die Basis, nur um am Ende dem Feeling freien Lauf zu lassen. Old School Jazz, der aus dem Moment heraus lebt, ein bisschen Mythos, viel Lebensgefühl. Insofern kann Nostalgie inspirieren, denn der Blick in die Geschichte zaubert alle die aus dem Hut, die einst die Richtung vorgegeben haben.

Und Helmut Kagerer stubst sie an, klopft ihnen auf die Schulter, stellt sich ihnen lächelnd zur Seite. Einem Billy Bauer etwa, der die Abstraktion in den frühen Jazz brachte und nun mit „All The Chords I Know“ ins musikalische Gespräch verwickelt wird. Oder einem Attila Zoller, seinem früheren Lehrer und Duo-Partner, dem er mit „Confrontation“ mitteilt, wie er selbst die Gitarrenwelt sieht. Auch einem Barney Kessel, mit dem er elegant und „Cute“ plaudert, vielleicht sogar den Ahnherrn Wes, dem er an einigen Stellen mit Daumen statt Pick einen Gruß zuwirft. Auch wenn die Großen der modern swingenden Gitarre nicht persönlich angetreten sind, kann man sie erahnen, Chimären und gute Geister eines Künstlerlebens, die im Laufe der Jahre ihre Ideen zu Kagerers Welt hinzugefügt und ihn darüber hinaus geführt haben.

Denn es ist eine Kunst, verankert zu sein, ohne festgelegt zu klingen. Von allen Gitarristen hierzulande, die sich hörbar auf die Tradition beziehen, ist Helmut Kagerer der individuellste Stilist. Das mag an seiner profunden Liebe zum Melodischen liegen, die selbst ins Abstrakte gleitende Passagen im Inneren zusammenhält. Es hängt aber auch mit einer natürlichen Lässigkeit zusammen, die sogar Purismus pfiffig klingen lässt. Und das eben ist die Idee von Nostalgie ohne Melancholie. Der Bandleader lässt sich davon leiten, wie auch seine Triopartner Davide Petrocca und Bernd Reiter, deren Bass und Schlagzeug mit trockenem Witz, beiläufiger Virtuosität, aber ohne überflüssige Redundanzen dem kommunikativen Miteinander erst die Form geben. Am Ende entsteht im Wechselspiel von alt und neu, von Witz und Eleganz eine Musik, die auf wundersame Weise zeitlos ist. Mit Hilfe vieler Freunde, von damals bis zur Gegenwart.

Undoubtedly the greatest personality among Croatian female jazz vocalists, charismatic Tamara Obrovac, gave us an extremely successful concert, not only because of the packed house and the applause which lasted forever… (her eyes filled up and she said “this is one of the things in life worth living for”), but also because of her interpretation and spontaneity, her honesty and utter exposing in front of the audience to which she gave herself to the full, through the music which should no longer be put into any slot – it is world jazz, period! Several encores, happy audience, happy Tamara… the concert worth of every praise. Such amount of inspiration, improvisation, “conversation” and interaction between the artists on the stage is rarely seen. “Ulika Revival” relives to the full and is right on target. A win-win situation for all parties.

Hadar Noiberg Trio (ISR)

Daniel Dor - drums ASCAP award winning flutist and composer, Hadar Noiberg’s NY based trio has had tremendous success performing at major festivals and venues in Europe, USA, Canada, Taiwan and Israel. “From the Ground Up” is Hadar Noiberg’s second CD as a bandleader and features her compositions for her trio- double bass, drums and flute. Noiberg fuses styles seamlessly. Flowing between Jazz and World Music, she has established herself as both innovative and highly skilled in the Jazz and World Music scenes nationally and internationally.

After working with such acclaimed artists such as Yemen Blues, Dave Valentin, Anat Cohen, Omer Avital and performing in venues and festivals as Blue Note, WOMEX, Discover Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Babel Med Music, Roskilde Festival, “A” Trane, Central Park SummerStage, to name a few, Noiberg sets out to create a new musical experience that has never been done before. Hadar will be featured as a showcasing artist at the ‘Overseas Night’ at Europe’s biggest Jazz showcase event, Jazzahead, which will take place in Bremen, Germany April 2016.

Noiberg’s trio is a ‘Power Trio’- tight, and full of groove and passion. The daring and unique instrumentation of flute, double bass and drums allows sliding in and out of Jazz improvisation and wwWestern harmonies with Middle Eastern and North African rhythms and semitones. The music of the new CD is fresh, spunky and boundary pushing- blending simple ‘folky’ melodies with intense development, soloing and communication.

Being a Jjazz musician with a vast Classical background and experience in playing Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern styles, Hadar brings all that to the table both in her compositions and improvisation creating her own distinctive voice. “From The Ground Up” features drummer Allison Miller, bassist Haggai Cohen Milo and guest artists Anat Cohen on Clarinet and Yotam Silberstein on guitar and was released in November 2015 under US/European label Dot Time Records followed by very successful CD Release tours in Israel, USA and Europe playing such venues as the Unterfahrt, Duc des Lombards, Porgy and Bess and the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival.

Mathis Grossman - drums Niogi is an Israeli instrumental band, playing original compositions, combining acoustic instruments and various synths. Core members include Omri Abramov (EWI and Saxophones) and Guy Shkolnik (Piano, Synths and Roli Seaboard), both compose the music for the band. In October 2015 Niogi released it’s debut album ‘Landing’ (Alessa Records), with Norwegian bass phenomenon Per Mathisen and drummer Utsi Zimring. The album was recorded and mixed by legendary sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug at Rainbow Studio, Oslo.
With their album raising attention from both promoters and media, Niogi was invited to play for the second time at Ingolstädter Jazztage (November 2015). A few months later the band went on a month-long tour in Germany, Austria and Czech Republic, including 3 open air concerts at Bohemia Jazzfest (CZ), and continued in east Europe playing Vilnius Mama Jazz Festival (LT).
On March 2017 Niogi will be launching another European tour of ‘Landing’ in Germany, Poland and Austria, joined by a powerful rhythm section including bassist Carmelo Leotta and drummer Mathis Grossman.

Martina Barta (CZ) - leadvocals Kristina Barta, whose real name is Kristýna Bártová, was born in Prague in the Czech Republic. In 2015, she founded her own trio - Jan Feco on bass and Marek Urbanek on the drums. She recorded the first demo tape and with her own original arrangements, the famous song Autumn Leaves (J. Kosma) won the competition Jazz Prix 2015. The international jury composed of R. Dombrowski (German music journalist), G. Schroder (The US Attorney Kurland Agency ) and Rudy Linka (Czech jazz guitarist) took her distinctive and fresh approach to the arrangement, and to her own compositions. The trio has performed at the Bohemia Jazz Fest in Prachatice and Pilsen before the band Yellowjackets.

During the same year, a live recording of the bachelor concert by Kristina Barta was nominated by the Czech Radio as a member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) in the prestigious European competition for young jazz projects Euroradio Jazz Competition 2016. The trio was chosen by the European Commission among the four finalists and Kristina Barta performed together with Jan Fečo and Marek Urbanek at the legendary concert hall Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

"Their music is a combination of jazz tradition and efforts to explore something new. The band sounds optimistic, after the periods of nervous or depressive modern jazz, perhaps, this is a new trend. Helped by the fact they are the young musicians who do not stick to the surface, but go directly to the essence of musical magic", says the editor of Czech Radio Vltava Vaclav Vraný.

In 2016 Kristina Barta won with her song "Find peace of mind" which was performed and written by her sister Martina Barta, a competition for the best jazz composition which is annually organized by OSA (Performing and Mechanical Rights Society).

Other activities and projects

Kristina Barta studied jazz piano at the Music Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under the guidance of prof. Karel Ruzicka and Vit Kristan. She teaches for several years at music schools in Prague. In 2016 Ratibořická Music School opened a new instruction branch in piano, focusing on jazz interpretation under her leadership. In Berlin, working with students Jazz Institute at the Universität der Künste.

EMA29 debut album was released in 2017 by Kristina Barta at the Austrian Alessa Records in cooperation with the Austrian promoter Peter Guschelbauer (among others in the years 2002 - 2007 he was the promoter of the Austrian Joe Zawinul). The steady trio - Barta, Fečo, Urbanek and the album expanded with distinguished guests. Trumpeter and composer Miroslav Hloucal, guitarist Kryštof Tomeček, saxophonist and producer Karel Ruzicka jr. and American vibraphonist David Friedman, a professor at the Jazz Institute in Berlin. In his life, David Friedman worked with musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Chet Baker. He was a member of the New York Philharmonic and also taught at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

"My development itself and the emergence of the album was documented by the leading Czech photographer Petr Krejci whose photographs are admired by people all over the world. He has exhibits in Seattle, Houston and Beirut. This uncompromising and decadent photographer reveals and underscores the interiority of music, which I am introducing to you", Kristina Barta.

Martina Barta, who will participate at the Eurovision song contest for the Czech Republic, will perform with her sister's jazz trio at the jazz brunch of the Jazzfestival Steyr. More information about Martina you could read under www.martinabarta.com.
